I had the Bruno dough which was just ok. I guess I shouldn't have expected alot. I also had the peanut butter and chocolate pizza. Not bad but not great. I saw the other pizza's and it was pretty basic. I guess being from Chicago made me think their pizza was extremely ordinary.

We went there on a very unbusy night. Service was typical for college kids. We were given a very awkward table in the center of a large empty room and asked to change seats. We were then moved directly behind a table with 5 screaming toddlers/babies. Ordered cheese garlic bread for an appetizer. It tasted like frozen microwaved garlic Texas toast with some mozzarella on it. Then we each ordered our own pizza and the mushroom ravioli. Pizzas were bland... Just a step above frozen baked at home... Though we did like the crust. Pizza sauce tasted like flat ketchup, cheese was tasteless and clumpy (looked like melted plastic) toppings were not evenly spread out, so one bite was a mouthful of sausage, next bite was cheese only. The mushroom ravioli was swimming in a creamy soup of again, very bland sauce and far too many mushrooms. It was not made well at all and after three bites we chose not to finish it. Our goal bill for four sodas, three pieces of cheese garlic bread, three personal sized pizzas, and inedible mushroom ravioli came to $90.00. The next morning we all looked forward to cold pizza only to discover that what was bad when it was hot became god awful cold. I would not recommend this. Go to Sylvia's brick oven pizza off Columbia street instead.

Bruno's is one of those quintessential family restaurants that you only realize is average when you get older. It has probably stayed in business because it is comfortable, but slowly moving out of fashion, like mom's jeans. I was there a few days ago with a group of people and found the pizza to be mediocre at best. I am not really sure why people think this place is the bee's knees. I am a Purdue alumnus, but even I can admit that "excellent" and "pizza" are two words that don't really go together in West Lafayette. I may have to return and try their other menu items, but it's unlikely.

Based on the local competition, this is one of the better pizzas in town. The toppings are tasty and plentiful, as is the sauce. I like that it's a locally owned, mom & pop type place. And everyone I've had contact with has been super friendly. Service is always good. Prices are decent. I've never understood the fascination with ordering "Bruno dough". It's...dough.

My family loves Bruno's. It obviously has a rich history with Purdue students and locals. It is family friendly - we always see families with kids there. If your family can agree on the same soda, it's a better price to buy it buy the pitcher. Like other reviewers have suggested, you need to try the Bruno dough. We like their pizza and the chopped salad is very good with blue cheese dressing. I appreciate the fact that they serve local craft beer from People's, too. Their collection of sports memorabilia is very impressive to see. Bruno's is a must try if you are in West Lafayette.

I will be the first to admit that this review is a little biased; I've been going to Bruno's since I was a toddler. It is strange to think back to its original building and how much the construction has changed over the last twenty years. However, my childhood reminisces aside, Bruno's has lovely pizza, much better than the soggy cardboard one receives from most chain retailers. The cheese is flavorful, and the sauce is sweet with just enough tangyness. Whether loaded with meat or veggies, it is delicious, and this makes it a distinctly American comfort food. The way they slice the pizza makes it all the more memorable. Aside from the pizza, there is a fun, athletics-obsessed atmosphere with decent service. Sometimes it gets a little loud, but that's what happens when you're at a family restaurant. The second best part of Bruno's aside from the food? Seeing the pizza dough being flipped in the air by the cooks. It is incredibly sweet, especially when they start to show off for the kids.

Not good pizza. Not sure how it has any kind of following for pizza. Dominos is better.

Bruno's generally has good pizza. I just do not care for the long pizza strips they cut. The crust is not as crispy as an Aurelios but pretty good. It has a sweeter sauce than many places. Bruno dough is hit or miss, though. It has been slipping lately. Anymore, it is often tough and overcooked...not like it used to be. Beers are very small and they have increased prices lately...which is why I give them just 3 stars. 3 stars due to the quality of the Bruno dough slipping. This place really needs to put root beer on draft. They only have root beer in the bottle, and it is expensive. Someone needs to clean those light fixtures at the tables, too.

Though I miss the old Swiss Inn location, the sports themed reincarnation still serves great food. Pizza and lasagna are my two favorites but I also love the completely-not-healthy bruno dough dipped in both cheese and marinara. If you like strange pizzas, they have an appple butter as well as one with chocolate chips.

    (4)
  • Steve S.

The toppings on the pizzas are high quality and fresh. For something other than pizza, my favorite is the Veal Gschnetzlets. I can spell it but can't pronounce it.

Bruno's has very mediocre pizza, bad Swiss-German food, and Bruno's dough (which is apparently an acquired taste: if you live in Indiana long enough, I guess you grow to think fried dough is good). The service is generally awful, and the atmosphere is some weird combo of Bennigan's and fake-chalet. Avoid at all costs, especially with Nine Irish and Puccini's next door. Hell, you'd be better off going to Scotty's or BWs. There are better places for pizza (but still no great pizza) in the Lafayette area, like Puccini's, Hotbox, Arni's, and, well, honestly, Dominos and Mad Mushroom.

Bruno's is a local institution at Purdue. The best item on the menu is Bruno's Meat, hands down. You can't go wrong with a visit to Bruno's while visiting Purdue. Too bad the room that looked like the Regal Beagle shut down!! Love you guys Brunie and Big O.

I have been going to Bruno's for as long as I can remember. I'm pretty sure they have some of the best pizza ever. The baked lasagna is also pretty amazing, but a bit greasy from all the cheese. I appreciate that they have a quality house salad that is more than just lettuce and a cucumber slice. I prefer sitting in the bar because it is dark, more private, and there aren't annoying little kids.

AWESOME (relatively speaking). Personally, I don't like the very popular pizza joint on every college campus that claims "better pizza, better ingredients..." At Purdue if you want real pizza, go to Bruno's. The pizza is awesome. The only thing is that they cut the pizza in long strips which is kinda hard to eat. But then again, pizza isn't exactly the cleanest food to eat, so I'll stop complaining about getting sauce all over my fingers.

One of the first places I ate in Lafayette as a grad school student back in the 70s, and it's still good. But I wish, wish, WISH they'd bring back the Luzerner Pastetli!!

  • Ron C.

The pizza is decent but not great. The pasta is pretty good but way overpriced. The Brunos Dough is completely gross and disgusting although I have a friend who thinks it is the greatest thing ever. The atmosphere in the sports room is great but in the other rooms it is like an old and run down old restaurant. The service is lousy.

Since moving to San Diego, I've been really missing Bruno's. Good crust, good amount of toppings and those long, scissor cut slices. Haven't found anything out here quite like it. It's high on the list for the next time I'm back in town.

We came here after a football game. Thankfully they took and then honored our reservation for 12. We had a fabulous time. Our server was friendly and even though they were packed with hungry football fans the owner stopped making pizzas long enough to say hi and check in on his patrons. This has been our go to restaurant since I was a little girl as we always have large parties for Purdue football games. They are always so accommodating.

The one truly great about this place is their pizza crust. But as with all pizza, crusts get cold and then they get sucky. Therefore there's virtually no point of ordering pizza For delivery as the crust only tastes phenomenon when it's fresh out of the oven. Everything else is so so. Toppings aren't that spectacular, just the regular pizza topping variety. (If you want more topping variety, walk next door to Puccini's, their crust is a hit or miss sometimes though). Ps: get their Shakies on everything. EVERYTHING.

I appreciate the decor here, it's a real experience for a Boilermaker nut I suppose. My mom loves coming here, so that's cool. The pizza was okay, decent flavor by a little bit overly gooey cheesy for my tastes. Definitely decent quality. Their house side salad was really well thought out and had lots of different ingredients, a very welcome change from the side bag-o-iceberg and shredded carrots many places serve. Service was efficient and friendly, which is great especially in a college town. Noise level wavered between acceptable and intolerable. Basically one loud table such as we're about 25 feet from us can really make it painful for the rest of the dining room.

A casual, homestyle type place that might not have the most sophisticated cuisine, but after spending those formative college years in the WL, you can't help but have a soft spot for Bruno's. Also, I realize it doesn't take a lot to make good breadsticks, but holy geez I love those things.

    (4)
  • Andrew G.

Bruno's is family owned and operated and caters to a variety of tastes. The sports theme brings a homey charm; memorabilia adorns every wall, and the nearby Purdue University is well-represented. The pizza is excellent, and the Bruno Dough cannot be missed. Order it with the nacho cheese!

    (5)
  • Jon S.

It's locally owned, and that's enough for me. I believe in supporting folks who aren't going to send a portion of my money to some corporate office. It also means that food is prepared by people who really care about it on a more personal level. The specials are actually "special" and not something that a marketing committee voted for. It's food that has it's own local flavor & style, which might not work anywhere else. It's Italian, it's Swiss...but it's also American--and uniquely so. And it's damn tasty. So, skip the chain restaurant and eat some real food.

Very disappointed. Food, mediocre at best. I ordered an Italian beef sandwich, bread not toasted, no peppers and a very tiny amount of au jus. The lasagna was served without any bread. Waitress said you have to know to ask for it because they were tired of throwing it away.... If it's included in your meal who cares if they don't eat it. I paid for it!! Don't even get me started on the waitress.....grrr I will not go again.

I found Bruno's to be exceptionally bad. While service and decor were fine, their take on some Italian staples was lackluster. Their veal parm may be the worst I've ever had. A very southern take on it where it was just strips of beef layered in cheese and piping hot sauce. Most customers in America expect veal parmigiana to be tenderized, breaded and pan fried. Ok, so veal parm didn't work out, try the pizza. The product used in the pizza was lackluster at best. Cheap sausage devoid of flavor. You know the canned little sausage bits. Bruno's dough may be their only saving grace, otherwise a general disappointment. The place had lots of space and enough tables for big groups. Our server was friendly and didn't skimp on refills. Splitting bills was a challenge. They had no way to issue separate checks for shared pizza and it was up to the customers to split it evenly. They offered no parmigiana sandwiches and now I see why. If I had ordered a chicken parm sandwich it would have ended up as grilled chicken with sauce and cheese tossed on top.

Tried and true! Always consistent. Wait staff are always friendly and prompt. I wish they had fresher options for pizzas toppings maybe an updated menu. I have been eating here all my life and have great memories of family dinners even at the old location.

This place is filling, cute, and right off of campus. We ordered a pretty standard pizza (pepperoni and banana peppers), and it was OK, but what pulled this up was the Bruno Dough. It almost had an oriental taste to it. It was really good when paired with some of that oozy yellow goop we all call 'cheese'. I feel like it would have tasted better with about 3 more beers in my belly. I can see this being A-1 drunk food. As a place to stop at while driving through Lafayette, it was just OK.

This place is pretty damn good. We generally come here to get a pizza, but mainly show up for the Bruno dough. If you come here, you must get the Bruno dough (it's not required but I highly recommend it). This stuff is good. We normally get the cheese sauce with it and everyone enjoys it. Their dough is among the best bread appetizers we've had. The pizzas are also good. They are priced a little higher than your typical pizza joint but they do taste better. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the quality of the other entrees, but if they are anything like the Bruno dough or the pizza, I'm sure they are good. I would recommend giving this place a chance if you're in the mood for a sit down meal in a nice, family friendly atmosphere and aren't looking to go to the typical, mediocre chain restaurants.

My friends and I were in town for a conference and were told that Bruno's had the best pizza in town. So, a group of us headed over there in multiple cars, hoping to get seated together. Parking was a little crazy - there are lots of things located in this same area. We went in and put in our name and estimated group size. They were really busy, so it took awhile to get seated. Everyone eventually made it in and the waitress came over to start taking orders. She informed us that large groups eating at Bruno's could not receive separate checks. Say what? Yes, we had a large group, but we're poor grad students - no one alone could afford to foot the bill for all of us! After a little bit of coaxing, she said that she would make an exception for us and we said we would go easy on her and tip her well to show our appreciation. Apparently, Bruno Dough is their most famous appetizer, so my friend got an order and shared them. Tasty, indeed. For the main meal, most people in our group ordered and shared various pizzas. I, on the other hand, had to order the Texas BBQ sandwich - pizza on a bun! It was SOOO GOOOOOOODDDD!!! I would go back again just for that sandwich, lol.

Bruno's is a West Lafayette institution. From Swiss origins, it's sort of a pizza place, sort of a sports bar, sort of a general restaurant... with apple butter pizza and cowbells. Really, if you live in the area, you ought to be stopping by Bruno's at least once or twice a year.

    (4)
  • Janie R.

Oh my gosh I love Brunos! Often go their for just the Bruno dough! If you've never had it, it's time to try it! Their pizza is good and the cheese is always stringy, which is awesome. Their other dishes are good as well. Great service although it can get packed as the seating room has more seats than room.

Bruno dough and mushroom pizza. Can't go wrong! Also the house salad has the most perfectly random conglomeration of toppings that some days I just want to order two and nothing more.

Bruno's has a long history on the Levee in West Lafayette and is famous for "Bruno Dough," deep fried pizza dough covered with garlic butter and parmesan. I've been working my way through the sandwich menu recently, and have found several highlights. I've tried the sub, stromboli, chicken breast, and Texas bbq and all are excellent. The chicken sandwish is grilled and is a nice healthy alternative. There is also a ham and cheese wrapped in pastry dough, and that is next on my list to try. Of course, this is a pizza place and it is excellent. Everything is made fresh on site. But it's not just about pizza. Bruno's is nearly as famous for their wienerschnitzel and other German dishes like knackwurst and geschnetzles. The menu includes many pasta dishes and salads, and a full bar. Bruno's is a local institution and has been owned by the same family for its entire existence. The dining area is casually decorated, and a sports room is packed with memoribilia. Many famous people have dined at Bruno's, including Bill Cosby who is a notable fan of the place and stops here whenever he's in the vicinity.

  • Brett P.

In a nutshell, Bruno's is a pretty good pizza place. -I think Bruno Dough (deep fried pizza dough buttered then sprinkled with cheese) is a bit overrated, but good. -Their pizzas are good, but I've had better (Puccini's anyone?) I must say that do enjoy their deluxe. Also they have some very unique desert pizzas that are worth a try. -The big salads are very good and go well along with pizza. -I've had a few of their other dishes from the menu. They were alright. -Service has always been good at Bruno's, prices are reasonable, and they are very accommodating to large groups. -The restaurant is pretty cool inside. There are a lot of TV's around to watch a game on, and tons of really cool sports gear decorates the walls. -There is a nice bar room and a good selection of local beers. Bottom line: Check it out with a group or a club social, and you should try the Bruno dough if you never have.

Oh Bruno's, I loved you as a kid growing up in WL, and everyone there is super nice, BUT, note to self and all others: stick with the pizza at Bruno's, or go for the catfish. Wienerschnitzel was greasy and over salted, and I am a confirmed salt whore. The seafood chowder was rather bad, and remarkably devoid of seafood. It seemed an amalgam of a corn and seafood "flavor" chowder, and was hugely heavy. Potato dumplings with meat sauce were fine if unimaginative. Knackwurst was quite good, with a very meaty flavor, although was also overly salted, battling with the beef for flavor profile dominance, and the accompanying sauerkraut was food service. Home made kraut would have been a nice touch, which is such a treat: less vinegary and overpowering, more redolent of cabbage and fermentation. Oh well, you can't have it all. Veggie sandwich was mostly an overlarge bread loaf, with cold mushrooms and onions, mozz and a bit of the tomato sauce. Not very appetizing at all, but food. The pizza? I will always love Bruno's pizza, a unique style, heavily cheesed and sauced with a sharp tangy pizza sauce, rather undercooked flaccid crust which asks for using cutlery, but somehow the damn thing works and is just damn good. This would never fly at any true pizza aficionado gathering, but this is West Lafayette's Pizza, and I will always love it. Very tasty, and they also have anchovies. I will say it again then sing it: when at Bruno's, stick to pizza!

  • Nolie P.

One plus for Bruno's: it is a family-run restaurant which is my preference for dining over a franchise any day. Bruno's is a local favorite but most must go for the memories and not for the food. I enjoy the decor (lots of local sports history) and everyone is in a good mood when they are eating at Bruno's so it is fun. The servers are always nice even when Bruno's is super busy, but if you are going to find excellent pizza you will be disappointed. I love the Bruno Dough but the pizza is "eh".

  • Patricia N.

Bruno Dough with cheese and marinara was fantastic! I tried a sausage pizza and the Bruno's Meats. Just a few pieces and I was full. The crust is very good. The addition of crushed red pepper and oregano made the pizzas perfect.

  • Chef Carolina C.

Last night was my first time at Bruno's. The Fried Dough was a very interesting experience for me, nice flavor and texture. Service was phenomenal and the hand tossed pizza was just perfect, the ingredients of our choice were: black olives, fresh basil and bacon. I highly recommend this place. By the time we were living I told my husband: " this just ruined pizza for me in Indy". I loved it!

    (5)
  • Bodie S.

The pizza is really great and unique here. I say this meaning that instead of slicing them in triangles like your average pizzeria, they cut the slices into rectangles. It's a small difference, not effecting the taste at all, but it's something aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. The inside of the restaurant is extremely nice and has a warm, friendly environment. They serve alcohol, foods other than pizza, and has plenty of space for large groups of people wanting to eat dinner and converse. I've never eaten anything else other than the pizza. It is in a good location on the landing near Nine Irish. They smother the pizza with tons of cheese, so for people who don't like overly cheesy pizza, I would find another business to purchase pizza from.

A Lafayette and Purdue classic place you must go to whenever you visit. Something about their pizza makes it so much better then any other place. You also have to get their bruno balls they are so good so greasy and I mean obviously not healthy but worth the calories!

  • Jim S.

Bruno's came highly recommended so I tried it along with several business associates. The best part was the service; our waitress (oh...sorry, server) was very attentive and spot-on when it came to service keeping our drink glasses filled. Two of my dining companions had pizza which is what I wish that I would have had. I had the veal parmigiana. Perhaps it is just because I was expecting "traditional" veal parm. Instead of a breaded piece of flattened meat, this was chunks which were not breaded. The sauce was rather bland, also, although it was covered with lots of cheese which is a plus. It wasn't bad - just not what I was expecting. The salad was excellent except for the fact that it included raisins which I do not care for. I was able to pick most of them off so no big deal really. But Bruno's is a bit hard to figure out: It is called "Bruno's Pizza" but they have German food on the menu. If I were to go back, I'd try the pizza. Then again, I would probably try something else for Italian food the next time I visit West Lafayette.

After two years in West Lafayette, I 'm ready to declare Bruno's the best pizza in town. Not best pizza ever, mind you, but definitely best in town. Yes, they have an extensive German-Swiss menu as well, but their schnitzel prices do not tempt me as much as that perfect doughy-bready crust, that savory-just-sweet-enough sauce and the lashings of greasy cheese. And naturally, my kids are all over the Bruno's dough and chicken bites (who knew that drunken coeds and toddlers share an amazing similarity of taste when it comes to food?).

  • Michael D.

Mmm... Just ate here last night, can still taste the Bruno Dough... This is a pretty great place for being within walking distance to campus- it's got some history in the area, and it has tons of authentic Purdue memorabilia on the walls without feeling like Applebee's/generic-chain-restaurant. Their alpine lodge dining area, near the bar, is quite classy, and a good place for a drink and a pizza. As for the food, a couple of things to second that have already been mentioned: Bruno Dough is a must for the first-timers, and yes, their house salad is worth it. They really put some effort into that salad. I honestly think the pizza overshadows some of the better menu items- the lasagna here is fantastic, and I definitely recommend trying it. That said, sharing a pitcher and some pizza is a great way to waste some time with friends, and Bruno's is a great place to do that.

Excellent Food! Excellent Service! Excellent Decor! I am in love with this place. Go visit immediately! This is an experience everyone should have. It's family owned and gives you that good old fashioned dining experience that's hard to find now. At Bruno's, they care.

I should have run for the hills as soon as I walked in and saw the flashing neon scrolling marquee over the seating area. Instead I stuck around to experience the most pathetic excuse for a cheese plate I have ever had the misfortune to endure. The beer on tap was stale, and the "world famous bruno's bread" is just deep fried bread. If I wanted fried dough, I'd go to a fricken carnival. Switzerland should sue this place for slander.

Pizzas here are great! even just cheese pizzas!! It's a cozy sports bar right by campus, and they open relatively late as well. The staff is always friendly. You can appreciate the jerseys and trophies of the Boilermakers and catch a game or two. Great hang out place.

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
